Freaky Friday 2017

Thank you so much to the Parent’s Association for organising the Finbarr’s Freaky Friday event this year. It was a great success. The standard of costumes gets better every year. There were lots of photographs taken and we will put them up on the website after the midterm break.
I hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable midterm break and we look forward to meeting you all on Monday 6th November. Parent teacher meetings have been organised for 22nd and 23rd of November so we will be in contact with regard to organising appointments when we come back.

Naturally Wild

No parents. I am not talking about the boys again!! We were very lucky today to have a visit from Dale Treadwell, the environmental conservationist. He visited all the classes today and shared his knowledge of wildlife with the boys in a fun and exciting way. Dale comes from Australia and you may have seen him on the television discussing bugs and mini-beasts. The boys examined woodlice and cockroaches under magnified bug viewers. I hope there are no cockroaches left behind! They learned about a hedgehog and Robbie the robin redbreast in the Junior classes. Dale is so enthusiastic about his subject that it is infectious. The boys really enjoyed Dale’s visit.

Third Green Flag Awarded

Well done to all of the school’s Green Committee and to Miss Costello for  their work towards promoting water conservation in the school. We have installed water conservation taps and flushes in the bathrooms through a government grant in 2010. We have a rainwater harvesting tank which is used for watering the plants in the school garden. The boys have worked hard at raising the awareness of water conservation in the school. We will be awarded our new flag next term and will proudly fly the flag for all to see when it is presented to us at the An Taisce awards ceremony.

Marathon Runners

The boys in 4th, 5th and 6th classes have run a marathon with their classmates over the past 8 weeks. Marathon kids was devised by Rod Dixon, a New Zealand athlete, to encourage children to get fit. Children frommarathon-pic-600-x-338 all over Dublin took part in the challenge and the final mile was run in the National Sports Centre in Abbotstown. Well done to all of the boys from St. Finbarr’s who took part. It is a great achievement!

Minister visits school for Engineer’s Week

Minister for Transport Pascal Donohue visited 4th, 5th and 6th Classes in March for Engineer’s week. He came with engineers from the Luas Cross City team who spoke to the boys about their work. The local community Gardaí Owen and Anton also spoke to the boys about safety on the Luas line. The boys were enthralled with the plans for the new Broombridge terminus on our doorstep! The engineer’s carried out an experiment with the boys on bridge construction. The boys took part in a quiz after the session and some of the boys won prizes. The visit was very informative and enjoyable. Hopefully the boys have been inspired towards a career as engineers or Gardaí. Engineers week

Proclamation for a new generation 2016

Proclamation for websiteThis year we are commemorating the centenary of the Easter 1916 Rising in St. Finbarr’s BNS. The boys have been working on lots of different projects in each  class. We will take part in Proclamation Day on 15th March with all of the other schools in the country. We will raise the flag in the morning at 9a.m. and sing Amhran na bhFiann. This will be followed by the unveiling of our own Proclamation for a New Generation 2016 which you can see attached. We drew up the Proclamation together. I went into each class and asked for  contributions from the boys and I was very impressed by  their aspirations for our country in the future. I’m sure you will be too when you read them. Each class will have a display in the lobby area of the work they have been doing for the commemoration. We hope to have refreshments afterwards. If you are free that morning we would love to see you there.

Easter holidays will be on 16th March at 12pm and we will re-open on 4th April 2016 at 8:40 a.m.

Green Committee

A new Green Committee was formed in the Junior and Senior Classes to help conserve energy in the school.

School Self Evaluation parents Survey

St. Finbarr’s B.N.S. is constantly taking part in school self evaluation. This is a planning process carried out in all schools to help us identify what is working well and what we would like to improve. Last year we looked at numeracy and specifically the area of problem solving. We have implemented changes to how we teach and assess the boys in this area of Maths. It is an on going process which we will work on for the next three years. You may notice that there are lots of new displays of Maths language and you may also notice that there are problems to be solved in the displays around the school.  The boys are particularly active in problem solving during Maths week.

This year we are focusing on literacy. The staff have identified the area of speaking and listening as being an area which needs improvement. We are in the process of looking at how we teach oral language in the school and how we might improve upon it. As part of the process we are gathering information through assessment and discussion. We would like to gather all of the evidence available to help us to improve on this area and we need your help. We have devised a simple survey for both parents and children and would be really grateful if you could click on the link below and submit your survey. It will really help us to inform how we proceed with our planning and development.

Please click on this link  to complete the survey.  Thank you for your continued help and support in providing your son with the best education  we can offer.
